A Clear Plan for Your Retirement

Retirement planning is about more than reaching a particular superannuation balance. It is about determining what kind of lifestyle you would like, when you want to retire and how your income and assets can be structured to support you throughout retirement.

Your retirement strategy may need to consider your superannuation, personal investments, mortgage, cash reserves, expected expenditure, eligibility for the Age Pension and how your circumstances could change over time.

We bring these different areas together into one coordinated financial plan. You will receive clear advice that explains what is recommended, why it is appropriate and how it relates to the retirement you are working towards.

Who We Help

People Approaching Retirement

You may be five to ten years from retirement and want to know whether you are on track. We can assess your position and identify strategies that may strengthen your retirement savings before you finish work.

People Turning 60

Turning 60 can create new opportunities involving superannuation, transition-to-retirement pensions and tax-effective contributions. We can help determine which strategies are appropriate for you.

People Ready to Retire

We can help structure your superannuation, investments and cash reserves to provide a regular retirement income while managing risk and preserving flexibility.

Existing Retirees

Retirement plans need to be reviewed as spending, markets, legislation and personal circumstances change. We can assess whether your current arrangements remain appropriate.

What Our Retirement Planning Advice Can Cover

Your retirement plan will be based on your individual circumstances. Depending on your needs, our advice may cover:

  • Estimating the income you may need throughout retirement
  • Assessing whether you are financially ready to retire
  • Reviewing your existing superannuation funds and investments
  • Making additional superannuation contributions before retirement
  • Using concessional and non-concessional contribution strategies
  • Considering unused concessional contribution cap amounts
  • Transition-to-retirement strategies
  • Commencing an account-based pension
  • Structuring regular pension payments and cash reserves
  • Investment selection and portfolio diversification
  • Managing investment risk before and during retirement
  • Paying down debt before retirement
  • Age Pension and Centrelink considerations
  • Planning for unexpected expenses and future care needs
  • Reviewing personal insurance as you approach retirement
  • Estate planning and beneficiary considerations

Not every strategy will be suitable for every person. Our role is to determine which opportunities are relevant to your position and explain the advantages, risks and trade-offs involved.

Questions Your Retirement Plan Should Answer

  • When can I realistically afford to retire?
  • How much income will I need?
  • Will my superannuation last for the rest of my life?
  • Should I pay off my mortgage before retiring?
  • Should I make additional contributions to super?
  • How should my retirement savings be invested?
  • How much money should I keep in cash?
  • Could I qualify for a full or part Age Pension?
  • What happens if markets fall shortly after I retire?
  • How will my plan adjust if my spending or circumstances change?

A good retirement strategy should give you practical answers to these questions rather than leaving you to rely on guesswork.

Retirement Planning Before You Finish Work

The years immediately before retirement can be some of the most important years in your financial plan. You may be earning your highest income, have fewer family expenses and have opportunities to direct more money towards superannuation or debt reduction.

Starting early gives you more time to assess whether your current path is likely to provide the retirement you want. It may also allow changes to be made gradually rather than relying on significant last-minute adjustments.

We can model different retirement dates, contribution levels, investment strategies and spending assumptions. This helps you understand the impact of each decision before committing to it.

Transition-to-Retirement Advice

A transition-to-retirement strategy may allow an eligible person to access part of their superannuation as an income stream while they continue working.

Depending on your circumstances, this type of strategy may be used to supplement your income after reducing your working hours or alongside additional superannuation contributions.

Transition-to-retirement strategies are not automatically beneficial. Their effectiveness depends on factors such as your age, income, contribution limits, tax position, superannuation balance and intended retirement date. We assess the complete position before recommending whether such a strategy is worthwhile.

Structuring Your Income in Retirement

Once your employment income stops, you need a reliable method of funding your regular expenses. This may involve a combination of pension payments, cash reserves, personal investments and government benefits.

We help determine how much income should be drawn, where that income should come from and how sufficient liquidity can be maintained for unexpected costs.

Your strategy should also consider the risk of drawing too heavily from your investments, particularly during periods of poor market performance. A structured approach can help balance your current lifestyle with the need to preserve funds for later retirement.

Superannuation and Pension Advice

Superannuation is likely to be one of your largest financial assets by the time you retire. The way it is structured, invested and eventually converted into retirement income can materially affect your retirement outcome.

We can review your existing arrangements, including fees, investment options, insurance, beneficiary nominations and available retirement income options.

Where appropriate, we may also consider whether consolidating accounts, changing investments, making additional contributions or commencing an account-based pension could improve your position.

Investing Through Retirement

Retirement does not mean that all of your money should stop being invested. Your savings may need to support you for several decades, so retaining an appropriate level of growth can remain important.

At the same time, taking excessive investment risk can expose your retirement income to unnecessary volatility. We help develop a diversified investment approach that considers your income needs, tolerance for market movements and expected investment timeframe.

We also review your portfolio over time and make adjustments where appropriate as markets, legislation and your personal needs change.

Age Pension and Centrelink Considerations

The Age Pension can form an important part of a retirement income strategy, even for people who initially expect to be self-funded. Eligibility can change as asset values, income and personal circumstances change.

We can consider how your financial assets, superannuation, pension accounts, investments and other circumstances interact with the applicable Centrelink means tests.

Our advice focuses on structuring your affairs appropriately while maintaining the flexibility and access to money you need. Centrelink benefits should support your retirement plan rather than become the sole purpose of it.

Frequently Asked Retirement Planning Questions

When should I start planning for retirement?

It is generally beneficial to start as early as possible. However, the five to ten years immediately before retirement can be particularly important because they may provide opportunities to increase superannuation savings, reduce debt and prepare your investments for retirement.

How much money do I need to retire?

There is no single balance that applies to everyone. The amount you need depends on your expected lifestyle, housing position, spending, retirement age, investment returns, other assets and potential government benefits. Retirement modelling can provide a more useful estimate based on your individual circumstances.

Can I retire while I still have a mortgage?

It may be possible, but the mortgage repayments and available retirement income need to be considered carefully. We can compare options such as repaying the debt before retirement, using some superannuation after meeting a condition of release or retaining the loan and continuing scheduled repayments.

Should I put more money into super before retiring?

Additional contributions may improve your retirement savings and can sometimes provide tax advantages. Contribution limits, eligibility, cashflow requirements and access restrictions must be assessed before deciding how much to contribute.

Should I move all of my super into a pension account?

Not necessarily. The appropriate structure depends on your age, retirement status, income requirements, contribution plans, tax position and need for flexibility. Some people may benefit from retaining part of their superannuation in accumulation.

How often should my retirement plan be reviewed?

A retirement strategy should generally be reviewed regularly and whenever there is a significant change to your circumstances. This might include changes to employment, expenditure, health, family circumstances, investments or government rules.

Can you help if I am already retired?

Yes. We can review your pension, investments, cash reserves, income needs and potential Centrelink position to determine whether your existing strategy remains suitable.

Do I have to live on the Gold Coast?

No. We work with clients across the Gold Coast and surrounding areas, and meetings can also be held online for clients who live elsewhere.
